Tips for Rescue pups
Here are some tips to help your rescue dog adjust to a new home:
Give them space
Provide a safe, clean, and comfortable space for your dog to retreat to if they feel overwhelmed or scared. This could be a dog crate with soft bedding and bowls in a quiet corner of a room, or a bed under the stairs. Don't disturb your dog in their safe space, or let other people do so.
Establish a routine
A set schedule for meals and other activities can help your dog feel calmer and safer.
Be patient and compassionate
Acknowledge that your dog is going through a difficult time, and try to make things as easy for them as possible.
Use positive reinforcement
Reward your dog with something pleasant immediately after they do something you want them to do. This will make them more likely to repeat the behavior in the future.
Exercise your dog
Exercise and mental stimulation can help reduce stress and anxiety.
Introduce your dog to others
Calmly introduce your dog to household members one at a time, and wait to allow other people to visit. Supervise carefully when your dog meets children.
Separate from other pets
Keep your new dog separate from other pets until you can introduce them outside on neutral ground while on leashes. In the house, you can use crates, pens, and gates to keep them apart.
